The cost of Steel and the impact on the UK’s Skip Manufacturing

In the first half of the 19th Century Britain was the World’s leader in steel production, producing over 18 million tonnes of steel annually and employing over 37,000 workers. Last year, in 2016 we were constantly reading reports about the industry sadly entitled “Britain’s steel industry – what went wrong” and “The rise and fall of Britain’s steel industry” – it’s pretty clear to see that not only was 2016 not a great year for Steel production, but things have certainly changed since the early 19th Century.

Since the turn of the millennium we have seen a 96% increase in Steel production across the World, the majority of this increase has been from China where they are able to produce steel very cheaply. This has obviously had an impact on the UK’s steel industry, making it difficult to compete with the cheap imports, however it has also been reported that the Chinese manufacturers are even providing steel at below cost.

The UK government claim to be doing all they can to help the steel industry, to assist in creating a secure long-term viable future, however with EU rules not allowing state support of businesses if they are deemed to support or distort competition in a single market, can the government really assist the industry? Will Brexit be beneficial to the UK Steel Industry we will wait to see.

In 2017, the National Association of Steel Service Centres (NASS) has stated that steel prices in the UK are expected to keep rising based on prices for raw materials and oil costs increasing. Their exact quote read “In the second half of 2016 the escalation of raw material prices, particularly on coking coal, iron ore and scrap, has resulted in steel producers seeking to retain acceptable margins by announcing significant price increases to retain acceptable margins by announcing significant price increase to maintain pace with rising input costs of £150 plus per tonne. This situation is not expected to change in the short term, with further significant price increase planned for Q1 2017 and with prices for Q2 onwards currently “ON HOLD.”

The UK is well known for producing high quality manufacturing and this is the same case for the Steel Industry. In China the manufacturers of steel receive tax rebates for exporting “alloy” and for them to do so they increase the levels of boron and chromium, but the issue with importing this grade of steel into Europe is that it does not comply to the European standard for structural steel. The risk for Skip manufacturers using this cheap steel means that these alloy additions can significantly affect the steel when it’s been welded, causing the steel to crack.

Are you throwing  money in the Skip?

Did you know that in the UK 275,000 tonnes of plastic is used and disposed of each year? To put it another way, that’s roughly 15 million plastic bottles every day!  Or were you aware that 12.5 million tonnes of paper and cardboard are used each year – it takes 24 trees to make one tonne of newspaper!

As a business, you may be responsible for disposing of tonnes of waste through normal business activities, this could be through manufacturing or even just paper waste through office activities.  Crates, wheelie bins, water and gas pipes, PVC window frames, plastic bottles and PVC film account for a high percentage of plastic waste.  Packaging, boxes and packing materials, office waste such as shredded paper account for the majority of paper and card, whilst in metal drinks cans and scrap metal is often thrown away without a consideration of cost.

In a world where recycling has been a buzzword for the past twenty years it also recognised that everything is a commodity.  If you are a business that is creating high volumes of waste each year, you may wish to consider the options of paying for your waste disposal.  Whilst it will be very difficult for a household to create enough waste to monetize, many businesses are now considering using different routes to not only dispose of the waste, but to look at options to recycle the waste for revenue generation.

Organisations such as local authorities, utility, glazing, construction, warehouse and retailers should all be considering of the option of selling the commodity they have often ignored.  All products sold in the UK has to be packaged and distributed at least once and all of these products need to be protected in transit, the majority of these are protected through cardboard.

Samson Containers are one of the UK’s leading providers of Waste Containers for all different sectors.  We can assist in providing waste containers of all different shapes and sizes to work within your organisation, to collect recyclable materials with a view containing the materials for easy collection.  There are many UK wide organisations that will pay for all types of waste, has your business looked into this opportunity?

There is of course a green angle to recycling, for all of the different materials that are thrown away on a daily basis.

Did you know that recycled paper produces 73% less air pollution than if it was made from raw materials?  All glass is recyclable and there is no limit to the amount of times that it can be used – glass that is thrown away ends up in landfill and will never decompose.

Do your bit for the environment and you could even be generating a revenue stream too.
